FC LONDON Women win League1 Title

It didn't make much of a different to FC London women's team that they had to rebuild their roster three weeks ago. They kept on winning and have captured first place in the inaugural season for League 1 Ontario's women's division. They finished first after defeating Woodbridge 2-0 at Cove Road field Saturday. FC London took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when Jade Kovacevic worked her way to the net taking a shot that was stopped by the Woodbridge goalkeeper. Kovacevic fought her way to the rebound and scored her 27th goal of the season. She's played in 15 games. Kovacevic also had a hand in London's second goal at the 39-minute mark. Kovacevic hit a free kick from 25 yards what was saved by the goalkeeper. The ball bounced back in front and Claire Monyard knocked in the rebound for the 2-0 lead. It was all FC London would need with Emily Gillet coming up with her sixth shutout of the year. She has allowed only 14 goals this season. FC London has been in the hunt for the title all year but thought they might be in a little trouble in late August when seven starters returned to colleges and universities in Canada and the United States. FC London replaced some of those players with bench players and some affiliated players yet they continue to be successful. FC London women have clinched first place in the league championship with one game remaining. They sit at 39 points, three up on Woodbridge and can't be caught. Their final game is Sunday, 1 p.m. at the Hellenic Centre on Southdale Road against Durham United. The German Canadian Club is closed for the remainder of the year for a field upgrade. Before they played Saturday night at Cove Road, four FC London players including Kovacevic played for Fanshawe College. Saturday against Woodbridge was their second game in one day. FC London also dressed and played a 14-year-old Grade 9 student from St. Joseph's secondary school in St. Thomas. Kaila Novak came on as a forward in the last 15 minutes. She is a member of the provincial soccer program. Article Credit: London Free Press
